Political Existences / 2020
This collection of street portraits, created in collaboration with the LGBTQ+ charity Spectra for Trans Day of Visibility 2020, unfolds across the urban canvases of London, Paris, and Argentina. The series features large-format portraits centred boldly in the streets, affirming the subjects' right to public spaces. Each image not only highlights the visibility of trans individuals but also poses critical questions about safety, belonging, and the ownership of urban environments.
Originally scheduled for unveiling on March 31st, 2020, the exhibition's launch was deferred to September due to the pandemic. The complete series, comprising twenty-six life-sized portraits, was designed to invert the gaze, allowing the subjects to look back at viewers, thus occupying the space typically reserved for the observer. In a further step to connect with the community, I displayed these portraits in the streets of East London, breaking through the barriers of traditional gallery spaces. This act questioned the accessibility of art and its potent messages of empowerment, ensuring that the voices and experiences of the trans community could reach and resonate with a wider audience.
